In Cold Blood: Movie

For the last six days I presented segments about Truman Capote’s best-seller In Cold Blood and its blockbuster movie adaptation. I covered the victims first, then the killers, the murders, the manhunt, the book, and Capote.

But, damn, I almost forgot to cover the movie – so here it is.

IMDB describes the 1967 movie In Cold Blood like so:

“After a botched robbery results in the brutal murder of a rural family, two drifters elude police, in the end coming to terms with their own mortality and the repercussions of their vile atrocity.”

By now we know that the movie’s based on Truman Capote’s best seller of the same name.

We met the victims – Herb, Bonnie, Nancy, and Kenyon Clutter.

We met killers Dick Hickock and Perry Smith.

We followed the manhunt from Kansas to Mexico, thru California, to Omaha, Nebraska, back to Kansas, down to Florida, and finally to Las Vegas where they were captured.

And we know that Truman Capote got invaluable assistance from his childhood pal and neighbor Nelle Harper Lee.

So let’s find out a little about the movie.

The movie is pretty much a two-man show with Robert Blake as Perry Smith and Scott Wilson as Dick Hickock.

But I gotta tell ya, even though Scott Wilson has acting credits all the way through five episodes in The Walking Dead and five epsiodes of The OA – I wouldn’t know him from a slice of cheese.

Yes, I saw him in In Cold Blood, but had to look up his name to see who he was.

Robert Blake, on the other hand, was a household name from 1975 thru 1978 when he starred as undercover detective Tony Baretta in 82 episodes of Barretta. If you were alive back then, you remember Barretta and his pet parrot Fred. In all, he accumulated 162 credits.

His personal life included being arrested and charged with murder in 2002 – but there’s not enough time to get into that here – later.

Here’s the trailer.

So that’s about it for In Cold Blood. We’ll get to both Barretta and Robert Blake soon.
