Sex and the City

Last week in “Overlooking Central Park” I mentioned the main character in The Dead Stripper taking an excursion to New York City. The purpose of Steve Piasecki’s trip was to meet two literary agents and convince one of them to represent him.

I took such a trip twenty-seven years ago for that reason.

This post is to pay homage to the agent who took me on and sold Born to Be Wild to Warner Books. Her name’s Connie Clause and I had no idea how lucky I was to have her represent me.

In The Dead Stripper Steve’s riding an Amtrak on his way to New York. It goes like this:

We’re a little less than an hour from New York City so I decide to go back online and look up both agents.

First comes Connie Clausen.

Damn, she started out as an acrobat and elephant girl with the Ringling Brothers Circus. She moved to Hollywood to work for MGM, then moved to Manhattan to become a Conover Model. I’m not sure who or what Conover is, so I make a mental note to look it up later.

She appeared as an actress on Broadway in “The Gambler” and also appeared in hundreds of TV shows and commercials. Wow, she put the deal together for Sex and the City ─ both the book by Candace Bushnell and the HBO series starring Sarah Jessica Parker and Jennifer Nixon. And get this, her character was included in the 2009 movie An Englishman in New York. The movie’s about a client of hers named Quentin Crisp. In that movie John Hurt, Jennifer Nixon, and Swoosie Kurtz are the stars, with Swoosie Kurtz playing Connie.

I basically just walked in off the street, an unpublished author, yet Connie treated me like a million bucks and put deals together for me. My everlasting gratitude goes out to her.

Coming March 1st

I’m America’s Best Crime Writer – Barry Bowe – & I approve this message.

My first book – Born to Be Wild – was published in 1992 & is still selling on Amazon & Kindle. It’s a true story about certain members of the Warlocks motorcycle gang.

The story took 21 years to play out – many twists & turns – an amalgam of Sons of Anarchy & Breaking Bad – but these outlaw bikers make the Sons look like Cub Scouts.
