Nurse Ratched

Nurse Ratched

In 1975, I was living with my family – wife and two kids – in Sunrise, Florida. My kids were going into their teens & doing things with their friends, I was playing in two softball leagues year-round, and the wife was playing mahjong with her Jewish lady friends from New York. In other words, we weren’t doing much as a family.

So they ganged up on me and created a family night. One week we’d go bowling, one week we’d do out to eat, and one week we’d go to a movie. This was our first family night and they were dragging me to some stupid fucking movie called One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

I pissed and moaned all the way from the ticket booth to my seat. Then I sat down and laughed my ass off from the time the movie started almost until it ended. Yeah, there were a couple sad scenes in between, but oh so many laughs. It instantly became one of my favorites.

There are so many great scenes and you’ll see more, but I decided to start out on the dark side with an evil Movie Villain – Nurse Ratched.

Great acting by Louise Fletcher and Brad Dourif (his first role) in this scene – and a great cast. Just take a look at the nuts standing around in the Reaction Shots – Jack Nicholson, Danny DeVito, Christopher Lloyd, Sydney Lassick (Chesswick), William Redfield (Harding), Josip Elic (Bancini), that big Frankenstein-looking guy who’s name I don’t know, and that little wimpy guy I don’t know. The Chief wasn’t in this scene, but don’t forget him, or Scatman Crothers..

I remember walking out of there and wondering if these were actors or real nuts. Other than Jack Nicholson I’d never seen any of them before.

I’m America’s Best Crime Writer – Barry Bowe – & I approve this message.

My first book – Born to Be Wild – Published in 1992 – Still selling on Amazon & Kindle. A true story about certain members of the Warlocks motorcycle gang.

The story took 21 years to play out – many twists & turns – an amalgam of Sons of Anarchy and Breaking Bad – but these outlaw bikers make the Sons look like Cub Scouts.
