Holly Hunter went from playing a deaf-&-blind Helen Keller in a fifth-grade play – to playing a mute woman in The Piano (1993) – & winning the Oscar for Best Actress.
Born as the youngest of seven children in Conyers, Georgia, she grew up on a 250-acre farm. Her parents recognized her theatrical talent early on & encouraged her to develop that talent. Which she obviously did. I think she’s a fantastic actress.
Full disclosure, I never saw The Piano (1993) – & probably never will. Nor did I see Broadcast News (1987), the movie that propelled her to stardom, or thirty-five more of her forty movies. In fact, I only saw three: Raising Arizona (1987), The Firm (1993), & Copycat (1995). Still, that was enough to recognize great talent when I saw it.
Raising Arizona
Last time I saw Raising Arizona was back around 1990 or 1991. She played second banana to Nicholas Cage. I watched it because one of my buddies played a significant role.
That buddy being Randall “Tex” Cobb, but I did notice Holly Hunter & thought she was good.
Raising Arizona is about a childless couple who decide to become parents by hook or by crook. Nicholas Cage plays the husband, who’s an ex-con, & Holly Hunter plays the wife, who’s an ex-cop. They “adopt” another couples’ baby & all hell breaks loose.
Here’s forty-five seconds of the trailer from Raising Arizona.
On the other hand, I watched both The Firm & Copycat within the last month. In fact, watched both several times during the last three weeks, & created posts about both.
The Firm
The Firm is about a young lawyer, played by Tom Cruise, who joins a prestigious law firm, then discovers the firm has dark & sinister connections with organized crime.
Holly Hunter works for a sleazy P.I., played by Gary Busey, as both his private secretary & his lover. But when the P.I. is murdered, she becomes Tom Cruise’s sidekick & helps him overcome several obstacles.
Here’s a scene from The Firm.
I wrote about The Firm a while back. If you missed it, click the button to watch it out now.
Copycat
Copycat is about an agoraphobic psychologist, played by Sigourney Weaver, who joins forces with a female detective, played by Holly Hunter. Together, they take down a serial killer who copies infamous serial killers from the past.
I wrote about Copycat a while back, as well. If you missed it, click the button to watch it now.
Wrapping up, I think Holly Hunter is a superb actress.
