Columbo
“Just one more thing.”
Columbo ran on TV from February 28, 1968 to January 30, 2003. That’s one helluva run for a bumbling detective who looks like a bum, is overly polite and always chomping on a cigar. But that’s one of the secrets to the show’s success. It’s all a disguise.
Another secret is that it wasn’t like most detective shows where the viewers don’t know who committed the crime until the detective pieces the clues together and figures it out.
On Columbo, the viewers knew from the get-go who did what. From that point, the fun was trying to spot the clues that will lead Lt. Columbo to discovering the identity of the perp and watching what he pulls out of his bag of tricks to get the perp to confess.
An outstanding array of the Who’s Who of Hollywood’s guest stars didn’t hurt.
As much as I like Columbo, I like Peter Falk even better in the original In-Laws movie with Alan Akin.
