Little Things

To me, in writing, little things mean a lot.

Thanks to Jen Latissa for inadvertently pointing out this little thing.

She came over Tuesday morning. Always stops at Dunkin Donuts on the way to get coffee and doughnuts. This time, those swirly glazed coffee rolls with chocolate icing. Umm-umm, good. We socialize a little & bring each other up to date on stuff.

Like, Jill left Pinocchio’s. Sonavabtich. Jill left before she paid off on the one pleasuring she owes me.

Anyway, after Jen leaves, I’m giving THE DEAD STRIPPER its final reading – for the sixth time. Get to the point in Chapter 25 where the Girlfriend comes over to the Main Character’s apartment “carrying a box from Dunkin Donuts and two large coffees on one of those gray corrugated carriers.”

I’m reading the paragraph where they’re sitting next to each other on the couch. “Eating doughnuts off paper plates and drinking coffee from paper cups.”

Without taking my eyes off the computer screen, I reach over and grab my coffee cup. Wanta finish the last couple swallows – & then it hits me. I can feel Styrofoam. The fucking Dunkin Donuts cup is made of Styrofoam.

Do a quick edit – it now reads “Eating doughnuts off paper plates and drinking coffee from Styrofoam cups.”

Every time you let something like that slip, you erode your credibility as a writer. Little things mean a lot.

Thanks, Jen.

COMING SOON

I’m America’s Best Crime Writer – Barry Bowe – & I approve this message.

My first book – BORN TO BE WILD – was published in 1992 & still sells every day at Amazon & Kindle. It’s a true story about certain members of the Warlocks motorcycle gang.

The story took 21 years to play out – with many twists & turns – an amalgam of SONS OF ANARCHY & BREAKING BAD – but these outlaw bikers make the SONS look like Cub Scouts.
